How to Use Essential Oils for a Natural Energy Boost
Posted on January 25 2016
Whether it’s the longest work day of your life, or you’ve spent your day chasing the little ones around the house and trying to stay organized, sometimes we all need a little pick-me-up.
Some folks like a cup of coffee in the morning, or tea in the afternoon. Thousands of people turn to energy drinks and all of their chemicals to give them that energy boost they need.
But what do you do if you want to avoid caffeine and chemicals?
Luckily, there’s plenty of ways to boost your energy in a natural, healthy way, without chemicals or caffeine!
Some natural things you can do that just get you in touch with your body are simple and effective. If you’ve been working at your desk for hours on end, simply standing up and spreading your arms wide can help. Not only will this help increase your energy by getting your blood flowing again, but a wide stance with your hands on your hips or arms spread is a power pose.
Studies have shown that standing in a power pose (there’s a few in these slides from Business Insider) for two minutes can boost your performance. It decreases your cortisol, allowing you to better handle stress, and makes you better able to take the risks at work that can lead to better job performance.
If you’re still stressed, you can also try this tip from Ashley in one of our earlier blogs, who loves it as a way to increase her energy and willpower throughout the day. Breathing deeply and inhaling the aromas of peppermint and orange combine for a powerful stress relieving effect, helping you get centered and stay in control of your day.
There are two oils that I keep on hand in my collection at all times, and that’s Peppermint and Spearmint. They have slightly different scents, and depending on your body chemistry, you may react to them in subtly different ways. I find spearmint to be a gentler sort of pick me up, while peppermint is more invigorating.
Try rubbing one drop of peppermint on the pointer finger of each hand, then gently massaging your temples before your next big meeting. Then try one of those power poses from earlier (by your desk, of course, not during the meeting!), and walk into your meeting feeling powerful, in control, and full of energy to tackle any problem.
Speaking of productivity, there’s a powerful oil that your entire office should love – Lemon essential oil! In addition to what we talked about in our last blog about it, you can also use it as an energy boosting addition to other oils. As an aid to your weight loss plans, try this mix in your diffuser:
2 drops lemon essential oil
2 drops rosemary essential oil
1 drop spearmint essential oil
This invigorating blend is a fairly simple little midday boost that’ll help you get through the afternoon slump. These are all common starter oils, so you should already have them on hand to make this delightful blend! To ramp up your energy boosting blend, you can also try our pre-made Alert blend, one of my favorites for mornings where I just can’t seem to get moving.
Sometimes, there just doesn’t seem to be enough hours in the day. You’d like to crawl back into bed and sleep for another few hours, or maybe an entire day, but there’s too much to get done. You can try this blend using oils that have been reported to give relief to those suffering from chronic fatigue.
2 drops lavender essential oil
2 drops petitgratin essential oil
2 drops Frankincense essential oil
Diffuse for an energizing and healing aroma that will make your day better.
Not only will those suffering from the debilitating effects of chronic fatigue find relief, those who have simply worked too hard for too long can see some relief as well. You can also get this blend pre-made as our Energy blend - plus, if you know you'll be using this often, subscribing to receive the oils regularly saves you 15%!
While these oils aren’t going to give you the chemical boost of caffeine, they are extremely helpful in establishing healthier alternatives to get you moving in the morning. If you’re trying to kick your caffeine habit, or simply reduce your intake, these can make the withdrawals just a bit easier to bear. :)
