How to Have an All Natural Home with Essential Oils
There’s a ton of different ways to use essential oils around the home and to clean it, as our Pinterest boards can attest to! Diffusers are popular for a reason, and they are a great way to add a special scent to each room. We'll be talking more about that in our next post!
In the meantime, though, let’s review a few ways that essential oils are great for your home as cleaners and as decoration, beyond just a simple diffuser that you can plug in.
The move to a more natural lifestyle doesn’t stop with simply rolling on your favorite smell or adding a couple drops to your bath (which, if you haven’t tried a little lavender with your bubble bath, you are missing. out.). A very popular way to use them around the home is as a cleaner – there are several recipes out there, and you should definitely test just how many drops of each you prefer for your home. Here’s a couple different cleaning recipes that you can use to not just clean your home, but refresh your spirit:
For a kitchen grime busting scrub/All natural comet scrub alternative:
1 cup baking soda
8 drops lavender oil
8 drops orange oil
How to Use: Mix well in a bowl to insure equal spread of essential oils in the baking soda. Use a non metal spoon! Store in an airtight container, preferably made of glass. Scoop out a generous amount, sprinkle over the area you wish to clean, then use a damp sponge to scrub and wipe away.
For cleaning different surfaces:
1/2 cup distilled white vinegar
½ cup water
10 drops tea tree oil
10 drops peppermint oil
How to use: mix together thoroughly in your spray bottle. Shake well before each use, and be sure to store out of direct sunlight. Spray on any hard surface you need to clean, and simply wipe off!
You don’t have to stick to using the same plugin diffuser that you first got with your essential oils, either. You can create your own diffusers that have a unique look to them that’s entirely your own! What better way to enjoy all the benefits of having the wonderful scents throughout your home than in a diffuser you’ve made with your own hands?
When adding diffusers to your bathroom, for instance, try using unique glass jars with diffuser reeds. Or, you could do scented votive candles – talk about a relaxing atmosphere for that bubblebath!
We love this guide for a DIY scented votive candle using essential oils, as it’s quite simple and easy to do. Try it for yourself and use it as a way to see which essential oils you prefer to experience this way. If you’re trying to relax after a long day, enjoying some lavender from a votive candle might be just the thing.
Presentation is important! You can use rice diffusers in beautiful bowls that complement your existing room décor, and add a little bit of visual interest to bookshelves or desks. Easily make your own rice diffuser for inspiration to keep in your home office (or at work) by following the recipe card we’ve included for you below:
Easy Rice Diffuser
½ cup white jasmine rice
1 glass or ceramic bowl, just big enough to mix a little
10 drops of your favorite oil blend
Add the rice to the bowl, add in the oil, mix well, and enjoy! It’s that easy. :)
