Top 6 Essential Oils to Diffuse to Brighten Your Home or Office
Posted on April 26 2016
Essential oils have many practical applications, but sometimes, we’re looking for something simple and surface deep. For some of us, essential oils are a natural and organic way to freshen up the scent in a room.
With the enormous variety of essential oils out there, deciding which oil or oils to diffuse for a particular room or effect can be a bit overwhelming…or fun!
Naturally, if you’re just hoping to diffuse an oil or two as a way to make your home or office smell nice, pick the oils whose scents you prefer the most. You don’t always have to diffuse essential oils with a specific purpose in mind – it’s okay to diffuse them just because you like the smell!
If you’re looking for pleasant scents that will brighten up your home, but aren’t sure where to begin (or which scents work well together), I’ve got a few easy wins for you!
Lemon Essential Oil: A productivity boosting oil that is wonderfully uplifting, lemon essential oil is often associated with cleanliness and organization. It has tons of uses outside of being diffused, but it’s my absolute favorite when I’m looking for a fresh scent. Not only is it a clean, invigorating scent, it’s light enough to not be overpowering. You can read more about its many, many uses in our blog all about it!
For a bright air freshener, blends well with: Bergamot, Sweet Orange, Grapefruit, Eucalyptus, Pine
Sweet Orange Essential Oil: This oil is wonderfully versatile, combining well with other citrus scents or you could blend it with spicy oils to relax. When diffusing as an air freshener, sweet orange essential oil helps lift your spirits while also calming your nerves. Like other citrus scents, it’s very bright, which is why it’s one of my favorites to diffuse as an air freshener.
For a bright air freshener, blends well with: bergamot, frankincense, lemon, grapefruit, marjoram
Pine Needle Essential Oil: What list of air freshening scents would be complete without pine? Much like lemon, the scent of pine essential oil is commonly associated with cleanliness, and is one of my favorites to diffuse after I’ve spent an afternoon tidying the house. The strong, resinous aroma helps clear out your sinuses, which means if I’ve had a bought of allergies or a cold, I’ll add it to my preferred blend of citrus scents to help my breathing a bit.
For a bright air freshener, blends well with: Lemon, lavender, bergamot, grapefruit
Essential Oil Blends
Don’t want to have to worry about which oils to diffuse at what time, or mixed in what ratio? There are quite a few blends that are ready to go and work just as well (if not better) as air fresheners – with a few beneficial properties, too!
Clarity Essential Oil Blend: I love this blend as an uplifting and happy scent that makes everyone who smell it smile. While it’s great to help boost your focus while you’re working, it’s also a happy scent that makes a home feel lighter and brighter. No wonder, since the oils we combine in the wonderful Clarity blend are known to bring energy and vitality into their environment!
Oils in this blend: Basil, Bergamot, Grapefruit, Lavender
Joy Essential Oil Blend: A complex blend of scents that lifts the spirit. This blend is for a warmer, softer type of scent that works well at the end of the day as you tidy up or while the kids do their homework. The Joy blend is less citrus-heavy and is full of soft floral scents, reminiscent of a bouquet of flowers.
Oils in this blend: Bergamot, geranium, jasmine absolute, petitgrain, rose otto, ho wood, sandalwood, ylang ylang
Zest Essential Oil Blend: A citrus power combination, this bright and cheerful blend has all the citrus scents that will uplift your soul, along with a bit of spearmint to refresh your mind. It’s one of our most popular blends, and is by far our favorite to diffuse in the office during the day! The Zest essential oil blend is absolutely a top recommendation for something easy and light to diffuse during the day.
Oils in this blend: Tangerine, lemon, grapefruit, orange, spearmint
If you didn’t notice a trend, there was one (a little one) – generally, for a bright, uplifting air freshener, you’ll want a citrus scent in your diffuser. To balance it out, you can add a little bit of Lavender essential oil for a calming and relaxing effect, or you could add a bit of peppermint or spearmint to increase the invigorating effect.
These are, of course, just guidelines as to which blends or oils work well together – experiment with the oils you love to find the blends that work best for you!
