Everyday Essentials: The 8 Best Essential Oil Blends for Daily Use

Posted on April 13 2016

Essential oils can be a complicated topic.

There’s a lot to learn, and a lot to consider, when it comes to mixing your own blends or knowing which oils are right for which situation.  On top of that, to create the specific blend with the benefits you’re looking for, you often have to purchase a dozen different oils, along with containers to mix them in.

If you’re just getting started, it can feel incredibly overwhelming.  You just want to enjoy essential oils, you don’t want to have to study what each oil does like you’re back in school!

At PeLoHa, we want to make it easier for people to enjoy the benefits of essential oils without having to conduct chemistry experiments to mix them together.  To that end, there’s eight essential oil blends that we use daily – and we’ve combined them into a bundle to make it easy for beginners to have everything they need to get started!

The blends that we use every day range from something to brighten up your morning, to stress relieving blends, and to the blend we use for a restful night’s sleep.

To start your day, there’s a few options of blends to diffuse while you get ready for work or school.

diffuse alert blend to add energy to your morning

I am fond of diffusing the Alert blend in the bathroom with me while I put on my makeup for the day.  It’s full of stimulating and uplifting oils, such as basil, rosemary, peppermint, spearmint, and lemon – with a little bit of geranium to balance it out.  Each oil in the blend has specific properties that help promote an uplifted mood and a more productive atmosphere.  I keep lemon and peppermint oils on hand on their own, but I like that the Alert blend enables me to get the aromatherapy benefits of 6 different oils without having to keep a bottle of each in my collection.

I also diffuse the Alert blend as a mid-afternoon pick me up, or pretty much anytime I’m feeling groggy.  Since it’s a pure essential oil blend, for topical use, it’ll need to be mixed with a carrier oil, but the blend makes for a wonderfully stimulating rub before a workout.

diffuse clarity essential oil blend to help decision making

My other much loved mid-afternoon pick me up is the Clarity blend.  I diffuse Clarity to help boost my creativity and inspiration – I’m diffusing it in my office while I write this blog!  Like the Alert blend, it also has basil included in the mix, but instead of the highly stimulating scents in the Alert blend, this one focuses on essential oils that balance and uplift, rather than just increase alertness.  That means that in addition to basil, the Clarity blend includes bergamot, grapefruit, and lavender essential oils.

The difference between Alert and Clarity is that the oils that go into the Alert blend are intentionally blended to help give you a nice mental boost, and to kick start your mind and get you ready for the day.  Clarity, on the other hand, is a bit better at helping you concentrate and focus. It’s a great blend to diffuse while your kids do homework, for example, or while you’re working on your taxes!

If you remember some of our previous blog posts, both bergamot and grapefruit essential oils also have properties that help with weight loss – so diffusing the Clarity blend might just keep you on track for that summer physique you’re trying to achieve!

how to choose which blend to diffuse for a pick me up

My absolute favorite blend to diffuse when I get home from work, or just when I take a nice hot bubble bath, is the Joy blend.  Warm, welcoming, and delightfully complex, it’s exactly what I imagine the emotion of Joy would smell like!   This blend is another one that allows you to enjoy the benefits of a complex combination of oils without having to spend hundreds of dollars to keep all of the oils in the blend on hand.

The oils that make up the Joy blend include bergamot, geranium, jasmine absolute, petitgrain, rose otto, ho wood, sandalwood, as well as ylang ylang.  Several of the oils in this blend can be quite expensive, so a blend like Joy allows you to enjoy them without having to invest in the pricier oils.

Each of the oils in the Joy blend were selected for their uplifting yet calming properties.  Many of the floral scents help you to feel grounded, while also boosting feelings of happiness and confidence.  In addition, many of these oils have properties that help fight depression and combat anxiety or frustration – a great blend to diffuse when you get home and want to shed all the worries of the working day!

add a few drops of the Joy blend for a happy, uplifting bath

I really love adding a few drops of Joy to a bath on my days off, or mixing a few drops with a carrier oil to massage into my skin as a moisturizer.  When I use it as a moisturizer, I get compliments all day on the lovely “perfume” I’m wearing.  I love it, because rather than a chemical soup, I’ve instead moisturized my skin with natural oils, as well as benefitted from the aromatherapy of the oils in the blend I added.

The next blend that myself and the rest of the PeLoHa team always keep on hand is the Protect blend.  This is a blend that’s similar to the blend tested at Weber State University and found to be 99.96% effective against airborne bacteria – talk about powerful!

diffuse the protect blend in your bathroom to prevent mold and mildew

The blend consists of clove, lemon, cinnamon, eucalyptus, tea tree, and rosemary – all strong antibacterial oils that are truly powerful against the bugs that make us sick.  Due to the powerful nature of these oils, it suggested to use them with caution around pregnant women.

Even when I’m not primarily concerned about fighting airborne bacteria, I honestly love the smell of the Protect blend.  The clove comes through with some very pleasant bright undertones, thanks to the other oils in the blend.

This oil also can help big time in fighting mold and mildew, so it’s a great blend to keep in the bathroom to diffuse during or after anyone takes a shower!

The blends leading up to this point have all been blends that focus on uplifting your mood, making your mind more alert, or otherwise stimulating your senses to help you get through the day.  There are two other ways to get the aromatherapy benefits from essential oils – to wind down, and to help you sleep.

the relax essential oil blend calms without necessarily putting you to sleep

After a stressful day, sometimes all you want to do is sink into a hot bath, or curl up on the sofa and read a book or watch TV.  For these times, a calming, balancing blend is an ideal aromatherapy aid to helping you unwind.  Our Relax blend has three oils combined in a way to help you shed the stress of your day – lavender, petitgrain, and frankincense

Lavender is an oil commonly used to help boost the effects of other oils; calming and balancing in its own right, it serves to help accentuate the properties of the other powerful oils in the blend.  Petitgrain helps soothe away your anxiety, and frankincense is one of the most highly recommended meditative and relaxing essential oils.

Frankincense helps you to relax by slowing your breathing and helping to control tension.  It soothes, warms, and aids in creating a spiritual atmosphere.  By combining it with petitgrain, an oil particularly good at relieving anxiety and combating stress, you end up with a relaxing combination of oils.  The lavender added to the mix amplifies both oils, as well as adds a pleasant floral note that makes the blend a real pleasure to diffuse in the evenings.

When you want to sleep, the blend of oils that works best changes a little bit from the blend used to help relax.  In our Sleep blend, we combine roman chamomile, lavender, marjoram, sweet orange, tangerine, and ylang ylang – floral, fruity scents that calm, relax, and help you drift off to dream land.

diffuse the sleep blend for a more restful, deep sleep

The oils in the blend are light, but still calming.  Marjoram is a beloved oil for soothing away many of the symptoms of the common cold, as well as helping ease stress away.  Sweet orange is a soft citrus scent that brightens up the blend as well as helps encourage a restful night’s sleep.  Ylang ylang is one of my favorite oils, and it’s addition to this blend helps to quiet the mind.

Ylang ylang is also a sensual, arousing oil, making it perfect for a bit of romance before you actually fall asleep.  ;)

If I’m having a hard time falling asleep, a warm bath with a few drops of the Sleep blend is my favorite way to calm my body and mind to help me feel ready for bed.  If you’re following us on Instagram, you may see me share some of my favorite bath time blends – and the Sleep blend is definitely number one!

All of the blends in our Everyday bundle are pure essential oil blends, ready to diffuse or to be added to a carrier oil for topical use.  We’ve created these blends because we truly believe essential oil use could be easier for the average person – there’s plenty of options and opportunities to learn more about the various essential oils out there, but sometimes, you just want something easy.

    Hi Jill!

I use an ultrasonic diffuser most of the time for my essential oils; here at PeLoHa we’ve been experimenting with a few different types while we decide what we’re going to carry in our shop. The little electric ones that turn water into vapor are my favorite for most daily blends or for diffusing at night to fall asleep, but I’ll use a candlelit diffuser (where there’s a tealight under a copper disc with water and the oil) for meditation or while I’m taking a bath.

    Hope that helps! :)

I was wondering how you diffused all the different blends? I know there is the necklace you can wear, but when you mentioned you diffuse your alert blend in the bathroom, what do you use to diffuse it? I’d love to start using essential oils throughout my day to help me stay alert and focused!
